Varian and Vortex
The Varian V73 was the first minicomputer purchased by the Department Computer Science (at that time the division Applied Mathematics and Programming).
For CPU intensive tasks and for our "daily" programming we did use the services of the University Computing Center (around 1975 an IBM mainframe running MVS). For tasks such as writing and testing of device drivers, development and testing of new operating systems, microprogramming, ... we did need a machine completely under our control.
At the end of its lifetime the Varian was sold to the U.C.L. Therefore only some I/O devices can be found in our museum. We also forgot to make some pictures of "our" Varian. However the available devices and documentation can still give an impression of this time:
