Do I need a login account and/or which computer can I use?
The accounts mentioned in this decision table are only meant for strictly personal (interactive login) use ... if you want/consider an account to administer a service with, there are other guidelines.
Decision Table:
- I will be using a workstation administered by the departmental system-group
- the workstation will be provided
- I'm here for more than a couple of weeks
- yes: a normal login account must be created
- no: a departmental guest account must be activated
- I have my own (or another non-system-group administered) computer/laptop
- I need access to the printers or other departmental services
(and I cannot/will not use an ssh tunnel to access them)- computer must be registered in the departmental DHCP service
- I only want to print via CUPS/IPP but do not need access to other departmental services
- yes: no departmental account is needed (neither normal, nor guest, nor Samba)
- no (so either printing via Samba or departmental services needed):
- I'm here for more than a couple of weeks or I want to use Samba
- yes: a normal login account must be created and if needed a corresponding Samba account
- no: a departmental guest account must be activated
- I'm here for more than a couple of weeks or I want to use Samba
- I do not need access to the printers or other departmental services
(or I am willing to use an ssh tunnel to access them ... not for printers however!)- computer must connect to campusnet
- a campusnet (clear text cabled or wireless) or eduroam (encrypted wireless) guest account must be activated if you do not have a KULeuven account
- I need ssh tunnels and I'm only here for a couple of days/weeks
- a departmental guest account must be activated
- I need ssh tunnels and I'm here for more than a couple of weeks
- a normal account must be created
- I need access to the printers or other departmental services
What do I need to do:
Decide what must be done using the above decision table and then ask the system-group representative of your research group to have it done:- to have a (departmental or campusnet/eduroam) guest account activated:
- a simple request to helpdesk containing the date upto which the account must be active
- to have a normal login account created:
- fill in this web-form
- to have a Samba account created:
- a simple request to helpdesk containing the departmental account for which to create a Samba account
- to have your computer configured for campusnet/eduroam, including wireless:
- no action needed, but consult the campusnet documentation
- you need a (permanent or temporary) KULeuven account to authenticate and get full access on campusnet/eduroam
- an eduroam account from the home institution should work as well
- if you do need access to other departmental services, you must use an ssh tunnel (and in this case you also need a departmental account, either regular or guest)
- to have your computer registered in the departmental DHCP service:
- and have it covered by departmental insurance: fill in this web-form
- only for machines that are owned by the department or one of its research groups
- more hardware details (serial numbers etc.) need to be given for the insurance
- and not have it covered by departmental insurance: fill in this web-form
- also for machines that are owned by yourself
- less hardware details need to be given
- and have it covered by departmental insurance: fill in this web-form
- to access the printers via Samba:
- consult the Sambadocumentation
What do I get in return:
- the account name(s) and password(s) to login and/or authenticate
- the (sys-group administered) workstation or the network wall socket to connect your own computer to
What does helpdesk need to do to:
- Activate a departmental guest account:
- select an appropriate cs* account and activate it with enable_login
- Activate a campusnet/eduroam guest account:
- use our KULeuven Account Manager
- Create a normal login account:
- input to create the new account comes from the web-form via e-mail, with instructions in it how to use cs-adduser
- Configure a computer for DHCP:
- fill in the DHCP configuration, depending on dynamic or static IP address
- connect the appropriate network wall socket to net 39 or 46 by patching the patch-board or configure cisco-switch
- Configure a computer for campusnet/wireless:
- no special configuration needed, any computer can connect to campusnet including wireless
- connect the appropriate network wall socket to campusnet patching the patch-board or configure cisco-switch
- the user needs a KULeuven account to authenticate and get full access on campusnet
