Recent Progress in the Solution of Discrete Ill-Posed Problems

by Michiel Hochstenbach, Centre for Analysis, Scientific computing and Applications (CASA), T.U. Eindhoven, the Netherlands

We will give a rather broad overview of the field of solving linear systems of equations or linear least-squares problems with a severely ill-conditioned matrix, and give some examples in signal and image deblurring.

We will also discuss some recent work, such as:

  • how to avoid oversmoothing of the solution;
  • how to include sensible apriori information;
  • how to deal with general regularization operators for generalized Tikhonov;
  • and how to combine several possible solutions.

This is joint work with Lothar Reichel (Kent State University).
