14 th Belgian-French-German Conference on Optimization Leuven

September 14-18, 2009

Special Topic: Optimization in Engineering

The conference is the 14th of the series of French-German meetings which started in Oberwolfach in 1980. This time, it is organized jointly with Belgian optimizers, and takes place in Belgium's oldest university town, Leuven, in the heart of Europe, close to Brussels. The conference will consist of 12 invited plenary talks, parallel contributed sessions, mini-symposia, and a poster session. It will address all aspects of optimization and its applications.

The topics will include, but are not limited to, the following:

theory and numerical methods for mathematical programming
continuous optimization: smooth and non-smooth, convex and non-convex
optimal control, calculus of variations, and optimization with PDE
robust and stochastic optimization
mixed integer optimization, multi-criteria optimization
optimization software and industrial applications

Several sessions will be dedicated to this year's special topic, "Optimization in Engineering", with optimization applications from domains that include, but are not limited to, the following:

chemical process control and biotechnological engineering
mechanical, automotive, aerospace, and agricultural engineering
electrical, power, and electronics engineering, and telecommunications
biomedical engineering and imaging
civil engineering and materials science
financial engineering
systems and control, system identification, and predictive control

Leuven is an ancient university town in the center of Belgium, situated in Flanders, 14 minutes from Brussels airport. Its university, the "Katholieke Universiteit (K.U.) Leuven" is one of the oldest universities of Europe, founded in 1425. The conference will take place in the historical university buildings of the "Maria Theresia College" right in the center of the old town of Leuven. Prizes for the best non-plenary talk and best poster will be awarded.
